Roanoke Times article covers the 2 biggest events involving baseball and swimming, but there are more things happening in Christiansburg this weekend. The Christiansburg Rec. Dept. is hosting the 2010 Dixie Boys Baseball World Series. If you are a baseball fan, you might just get a chance to see some of 'tomorrow's major league players before they get to the big league. The kick off is Friday with some individual competitions at the field, Opening Ceremonies and a Fireworks display at Christiansburg High School Football field . Games start on Saturday and run through the week (
see the flyer for details and times).
The Aquatic center is holding the Virginia Age Group Championship Swim Meet from July 29 - August 1. (
See the link for details provided by the Town of Christiansburg.) A word of warning on this one though, rumor has is that 90 vehicles were towed during the last event. Signs are posted, read them and park where parking is allowed. Some citizens don't like vehicles parked in their yards without their permission. Please be courteous.
The monthly 'block party' in downtown "Last Friday" is happening on Saturday this month so as not to conflict with the opening ceremonies of the baseball tournament. Parking is available at the Medical Arts Building. Sorry, I don't have a flyer and couldn't find more detailed information on the website, but I've heard a lot of people have enjoyed the previous ones. Perhaps some readers can supply details in comments.
Christiansburg Classic Cruisers will be at the K-Mart parking lot from 4pm to 8pm on July 31. While this is a regular weekend event, you never know what you will find. Cars, motorcycles, food, music, or a combination of all of the above. (The best part is that there is plenty of shade.)
Whatever you choose to do, please do it safely. Our Police, Fire, and Rescue are great. However, with this much going on, they are likely to be stretched thin. While the Police Dept. can pull on overtime, the Fire and Rescue are volunteer units. If you have an interest and the time, you might want to consider joining them in providing some of the most important services citizens rely upon. It is likely that a lot of people who are unfamiliar with our streets will be driving around town, a little bit of patience and courtesy can go a long way in helping to keep everyone safer.
